The Great Grain Growers – 21st Century Technology in Rural Essex
This video was filmed and produced by year 9 students at the Thomas Lord Audley School and Language College, Colchester.
Inspired by early film clip resources from the East Anglian Film Archive, the students, in collaboration with a loal farm within their catchment area, made a video showing how aspects of rural Essex had changed. After watching film footage of farming in the 1920s, students storyboarded a modern day re-enactment, looking at how farming has developed through the years driven by the impacts of technology.
The project involved many local community and cross-curricular links, providing students with geographical information and aspects of social change, whilst impressing on them the impacts of technologies which are now heavily relied on, such as; the GPS which guides the combine harvester; the sensor-triggered grain drying machine; and the quality testing of the grain. These bring direct links between Science, Technology and ICT.
